As coach Kemper Amick cleaned out the room full of reporters, he spotted several in the back whom had been quickly packing up.
"You know that Ventrell committed to Kentucky, right?"
Thinking the 'Cats had already signed the 6-foot-3, 260 pound Ventrell, Scout.com's Miller Safrit thought nothing of it, until he had gotten back.
Jenkins, whom had signed to play for South Carolina State last season, is the Wildcats 23rd verbal commitment of 2005 and if he qualifies, will be the Wildcats biggest defensive end to enroll.
Jenkins' story is rare. After signing with South Carolina State, Jenkings took the year off while trying to qualify. He figured if he qualified, he'd have ample time to return to SC State or find a new home.
With Mike Davis' recruitment coming to a close, Joker Phillips and the Kentucky staff sought the advice of Amick, whom insisted he take a look at Jenkins.
At 6-foot-3, he's everything the 'Cats need on the outside, with a legitament 4.7 speed. If he's got the wheels that he says he does, the Cats could be in for a real treat as a grayshirt. But how will the time off effect him? That remains to be seen, but for the mean time, the Wildcats are basking in the glow of another diamond in the rough.
This time after narrowly missing out on the biggest gem of them all (Mike Davis).
