LexCath WR is son of former UK great

Lexington Catholic wide receiver Cornell Burbage knows all about Kentucky, but will the Wildcats offer the son of the former UK great or is the talented star headed out of the state?

"Miami (FL), Georgia, Northwestern, Michigan and Kentucky all came in to school," Cornell Burbage said. "I haven't really started getting much college interest yet."

Burbage is Lexington Catholic's key wideout for quarterback Justin Burke, whom is considered to be one of the top quarterback prospect in 2006. He is the son of former Kentucky wide receiver great Cornell Burbage, Sr. "I'm very talented," Burbage explained. "I've got quick hands and quick feet. I've grown very well in the past few years."

Burbage wants to play wide receiver at the next level, but is open to playing elsewhere if he has to in order to gain more exposure. According to Burbage's coach, Bob Spire, his greatest asset could be his play-making ability at kick returner and punt returner, where the talented athlete really has shown off his skills.

"Cornell has great catch skills," Lexington Catholic coach Bob Spire said. "He's very athletic, and he is an outstanding punt returner also."

Still it's cornerback where the 5-foot-11 athlete might be the most attractive spot. The senior-to-be is hoping he can utilize this summer to gain confidence and experience at the position; "I'm hoping to work on a little bit of defense this summer and focus on some 'DB' because I think I'm gonna play a lot on defense next year. I also will work on catching the ball. I'm always working on my hands."

"I'm gonna go to Nike football camp, Auburn senior day camps," Burbage said. "I'm gonna check out some ACC schools - Michigan too. Our team goes to the UK 7-on-7 camp usually, so I'll be at that too."

Burbage had 29 catches for 541 yards for an 18.7 average for the Knights. The son of the former University of Kentucky wide receiver Cornell Burbage, Sr., contributed 6 touchdowns receiving, while also adding 2 punt returns for touchdowns and 1 kickoff returned for a touchdown. On the year, Burbage averaged an amazing 41.9 yard average on punt returns, accumulating over 335 yards.

Even with the departure of Brandon Logan, the Knights should be just fine with Burbage and Burke leading the way this season; "I think we'll go to state," Burbage said. "We're gonna have a pretty good team, with Justin (Burke) back, we should be able to do a lot of things offensively."

More: Burbage is currently playing basketball for Lexington Catholic. He emulates the great Jerry Rice and rooted for Miami (FL) as a kid. He has no leader at this time and is hoping to receive more college interest. He was an all-state honorable mention as a junior.
