According to sources at UMass and Eastern Kentucky, where Ford currently coaches, the deal could be done this week. Contacted by phone last night, Ford said to the Boston Globe, "I talked to them, and we had a good discussion, and I'm just waiting to see what happens."
One twist in the story may or may not be Ford's interest in the head coaching job at Tennessee, where Ford's name has been bantered about. Ford did not deny interest in that position but did not validate it either. "I'm just waiting to see what happens in a lot of places," he said.
Although Ford has no direct UMass ties, he played for Rick Pitino at Kentucky. Pitino is a UMass graduate was rumored to have served up Ford's name to his alma mater.
