Tubby Smith receives Jim Phelan award

On Monday Tubby Smith was rewarded the 2005 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award, beating out NCAA runners up Illinois' Bruce Weber.

On Monday Tubby Smith was rewarded the 2005 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award, beating out NCAA runners up Illinois' Bruce Weber.

Smith received 10 first-place votes, while Weber received 8. Utah's Ray Giacoletti and Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Bruce Pearl each received one first-place vote. Pacific's Bob Thomason finished third overall in the voting, followed by Pearl, Boston College's Al Skinner and Giacoletti.

Smith is the third recipient of the Jim Phelan Coach of the Year award. The award is named after long-time Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan.

Mercer's Mark Slonaker was the 2003 recipient and St. Joseph's Phil Martelli took the honor in 2004.
