Chuck, who led both teams in rebounding, guarded Pepperdine's Glen McGowen much of the night. The 6-foot-9 high scoring forward averaged nearly 20 points per game for Paul Westphal this season but had difficulty handling the strength of Hayes. McGowen finished with just 3-10 field goal shooting and had one assist with two turnovers.
Beach Barton built a steady lead in the first half and went into the locker room with a 45-32 lead. However, the Portsmouth club would not fold, and mounted a big comeback in the second half behind the hot shooting of Depaul's Quemont Greer and Houston's Andre Owens.
Hayes himself had a rough night from the field, shooting just 3-8. However the 6-foot-6 Wildcat used his first quick step to get around and past defenders, drawing several fouls. Hayes got six of his 12 points from the free throw line.
Chuck had some difficulty getting shots up over the long arms of McGowen and 6-foot-9 Elton Brown of Virginia.
