Chuck Hayes had 18 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and three steals on Friday night at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament as his Sports Club team trounced the Norfolk Naval Shipyard team by the lopsided score of 92-59.
"Chuck had a very good night tonight," the Portsmouth assistant coach P. J. Honore said, "he's a smart player. He has good defensive skills and is a good interior post scorer. He plays bigger than this listed height."
Chuck played a game-high 32 minutes and shot better from the floor tonight than he did Thursday night. Chuck was 3-8 from the field Thursday but 8-13 Friday night as the Sports Club team built a 13 point lead by the break, then broke the game open in the second half.
Depaul's Quemont Greer led the Sports Club in scoring with 23 points and added 10 rebounds of his own against the overmatched shipyard team.
Defensively, Chuck guarded Portland State's Seamus Boxley much of the night, holding the 6-foot-7, 220 lb forward to just two points and two rebounds in 28 minutes of play.
Chuck is hoping to attract the attention of NBA scouts at this tournament. Chuck also plans to attend an NBA camp in Chicago in early June. Most experts believe Chuck is a second round selection, if at all. But a few more nights like this and Chuck may very well make some believers out of a few NBA scouts.
