NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The LSU Lady Tigers brought Kentucky's season to a close Friday with a 74-62 win in the SEC Tournament.
LSU (16-10) advances to face No. 3 Tennessee in the semifinals. Kentucky (9-20) lost for the 14th time in its last 16 games.
``Obviously, nobody thought we'd be here, and that just shows you again the heart of this ballteam,'' said Kentucky coach Bernadette Mattox, whose team upset No. 5 seed Mississippi State in the opening round. ``LSU was very patient in their offense, they took care of the basketball. We gave up too many offensive rebounds, too many fast-break opportunities and they capitalized on them down the stretch.''
LSU led 34-25 at the half. Kentucky twice pulled within five late in the game, but could get no closer than 66-61.
Using a rotation that featured only six players, balance was the key for the Lady Tigers. Center Aiysha Smith led five players in double-figure scoring with 18 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Doneeka Hodges followed with 15 points and Temeka Johnson added 13 for the winners.
LSU shot 48 percent from the field, hit 15 of 17 at the line and held a commanding 41-27 rebounding advantage.
Kentucky went 43 percent from the field and capitalized on only six of its 13 trips to the line. Rita Adams and Sese Helm each scored 14 points to lead the Cats.
