Former Kentucky wide receiver Randy Wyatt still believes that the Wildcats can eventually have a winning program. However, Wyatt, the successful track coach of annual state champion Paducah Tilghman, admits the Cats face an uphill battle.
"To be honest, the perception of Kentucky football is not very good in my part
of the state," Wyatt said. "The fact they have not won much doesn't help. It's
hard to say what it will take to turn that around. Most people don't say much
to me because they know I am biased."
Biased? Try blue to the bone. Don't believe me. Try criticizing his former
coach, Bill Curry.
"I played for coach Curry and no one is going to say anything bad about him in
front of me and still stand there," Wyatt said. "That's sound harsh, but he is
one of the best men I have ever met in my life. Playing for him was a blessing
Wyatt says the Cats recruit western Kentucky as hard as possible. He says
offensive coordinator Joker Phillips is a frequent visitor at Paducah Tilghman
and that he can't fault UK's recruiting efforts.
"Coach (Rich) Brooks is a well respected coach. They have an awesome staff,"
Wyatt said. "They are doing all they can to be successful. Believe it or not,
they will get the program turned around. I truly believe that."
Wyatt, a former assistant football coach at Paducah Tilghman, thinks the
addition of Chuck Smith to the coaching staff can only help UK. Wyatt got to
see way more of Smith's Boyle County teams in the recent high school playoffs
than he wanted during Boyle's streak of six straight state championship game
"His relationship with kids will make a big difference," Wyatt said. "If you
can't relate to student-athletes, you can't motivate them. That's half the
battle. Chuck can obviously relate, and motivate.
"He also played at Kentucky, just like I did, so he will bleed blue. That
makes a difference, too. I just hope people give this staff a chance because
from all I have seen and heard, I think this staff can get the job done."
