LEXINGTON, Ky. --- Kentucky scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth Wednesday en route to a 4-3 win over Austin Peay at Applebee's Park.
Scott Wade (3-2) earned the win in relief as the Wildcats improved to 9-8 on the season. Austin Peay dropped to 7-6.
"I thought the key to the comeback win today was Scott Wade coming in and slamming the door in relief duties," UK coach Keith Madison said. "Our hitters also executed when they had to. Caleb Stewart did a great job of advancing the game-winning runner from second to third and Gordon Tyler had a great approach at the plate on getting a sacrifice fly to score Brad (Pickrell). I'm proud of our execution today."
The Wildcats fell behind 3-0, but finally got to APSU starter Mike Weel in the fifth inning. Weel did not allow a hit or baserunner until Brad Pickrell singled in the fourth inning, but Cory Hahn and Spencer Preston reached on back-to-back singles in the fifth. Matt Fritts then ripped a single to score Hahn, and a scarifice fly by Pickrell sliced the lead to 3-2.
Wade entered in the sixth for starter Rob Corrado and threw four innings of two-hit, shutout relief. He struck out five while walking only one.
Kentucky took the lead in the eighth as Tyler brought home Pickrell on a sacrifice fly. The run-producing fly came on the heels of Stewart moving the runner to third with a well-executed ground ball to the right side of the infield.
The Cats begin Southeastern Conference play this weekend when they travel to Auburn for a three-game series. AU owns a 53-30 edge on UK, including a 25-15 mark on the Plains.
Junior right-hander Joseph Blanton (2-1, 1.84 ERA, 46 K), the SEC Pitcher of the Week, will get the start against AU's junior right-hander Levale Speigner (4-1, 3.74, 24 K) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
