Nothing will help Kentucky's defense more this year than the return of cornerback Bo Smith.
"He is a leader and a guy all the players respect," said Kentucky defensive
coordinator Mike Archer. "Having him back is a huge, huge plus for our defense."
Smith missed last season after he was injured in a preseason fight that put
his football future in limbo. However, he fully recovered from surgery and
showed no ill effects in spring practice when he returned to the team. So far
this preseason he's been the cornerback Kentucky needs to match up against
speedy Southeastern Conference receivers.
"He is a shutdown corner, and those are rare at any level of football," Archer
said. "He will take your best receiver and take him out of the game. I can't
tell you what that can mean for a defense."
Come on, coach. Tell me just a little bit about what that can mean for the
"That lets us do some things away from him where we don't worry about him
getting beat or what he is doing," Archer said. "We just match him up
one-on-one with his guy and he shuts him down. He has post help, but that's it.
"We don't have to cheat a safety to help him because we know Bo will take care
of his responsibility. We can use that safety to do other things. We couldn't
do that last year. That's nothing against the players we had, but it's just
rare to have a guy like Bo on your team. When you have a cornerback that you
know can cover one-on-one, it just makes the whole defensive scheme a whole
