Tipoff 2006: SEC Media Days -Preseason Picks

BIRMINGHAM, Ala -- SEC Media Days tips off today, with 24 SEC coaches and up to 48 student-athletes visiting the SEC home headquarters. The SEC Media will present preseason picks for all-SEC teams, as well as predictions for league standings on Thursday. Here's a sneak peek at KSR's submission.

Although the SEC will expand the teams, each media entry is required to select five men and five women for their "All-SEC" selections. Narrowing down talent to such a small number is tough, but here are the selections from KSR:

G - Rajon Rondo, Kentucky.
G - Ronnie Brewer, Arkansas.
F - Glen "Big Baby" Davis, LSU
F - Chuck Davis, Alabama
C - Jamario Davidson, Alabama

Only the selections of Rajon Rondo and Glen "Big Baby" Davis were easy. Ronnie Brewer was an easy selection, but hard to slot, and at 6-foot-7, he can play guard or small forward. We slotted him at shooting guard instead, and gave him the nod for "player of the year" over Kentucky's Rajon Rondo.

Chuck Davis has been solid, if not spectacular, thoughout his career at Alabama, and a second first team all-SEC selection was given to Alabama almost by default with Jamario Davidson at the center position. No true centers stand out this year in the SEC with Kentucky's Randolph Morris' eligibility still in question, and Davidson has provided enough to slot him here by default.

On the women's side, we have selected:

G - Seimone Augustus, LSU
G - Samantha Mahoney, kentucky
F - Tasha Humphrey, Georgia
F - Carla Thomas, Vanderbilt
C - Sylvia Fowles, LSU

Our pick for player of the year is Augustus, who may be as good as anyone in college basketball. The surprise pick is a "homer" pick in Samantha Mahoney, a young sophomore who will be called upon by the UK Hoops team, and the bet here is that the opportunity will provide a showcase for her to shine. As one of the KSR astute posters mentioned, failing to include a UK player could make one look quite foolish if UK finishes well into the top half of the SEC under Coach Mickie DeMoss.

KSR preseason selections for order of finish in the SEC will be revealed later today, so stay tuned for that, as well as complete tip-off to conclusion coverage of SEC Media Days at Kentucky Sports Report.
