Danny Green hit a 3-pointer on UNC's next possession to give the Heels the lead, which they never relinquished. The Heels rode Terry's 16 first half points to a 44-32 halftime lead. Despite two second half runs, it was too large of a margin to overcome.
After the halftime break, Kentucky reeled off a 12-2 run to begin the second half, and cut the lead to 46-44 with 15:57 to play. Rekalin Sims led the charge with five points, and Bobby Perry added four, but the Cats could not get any closer.
Kentucky was led by Rajon Rondo's 20 points, but eight points were scored on four mostly uncontested layups in the last 23 seconds. Ravi Moss had a career-high 17 points. Ramel Bradley added 12, with Patrick Sparks scoring 10 on 3-12 shooting. Bobby Perry had a career high 11 rebounds to go with his eight points on the day.
The Cats move to 96-2 when shooting more than 50% under Tubby Smith, as the Cats hit 51% for the day. North Carolina shot 43% from the field, but hit 10-27 (37%) from 3-point range, and outrebounded Kentucky 37-30 in the victory.
With the loss, Kentucky falls to 5-2 on the season, and their 39 consecutive weeks in the AP Top 10 is all but assured to end with next week's poll. North Carolina moves to 5-1 with the victory.
