On December 05, Hargrave conducted their year football combine that is customarily held on the first Monday in December. On this day, traffic into Chatham, Virginia is stepped up another level. Some 200 coaches flood into the school for the combine. They come from Dl, Dl AA, Dll, Dlll, and NAIA schools from all over the country.
The combine yielded some interesting results on the Hargrave squad numbering 53. The weather was a major player in the some of the number that were produced. Some of the events that are normally held outside had to be conducted indoors due to snow on the ground. Running the forty-yard on an indoor surface is sometimes not conducive to good times. This writer having attended the first high school combine held in Kentucky at Hazard, the weather was a factor in that one when the bag drills and forty-yard dashes were conducted in the Hazard Pavilion.
Coach Rich Brooks and Joker Philips was on hand for the HMA combine and their interest was especially high as it related to couple UK recruit participants, Corey Goodson and tight end T.C. Drake who is originally from western Kentucky. These are a couple of youngsters that have already grace the field at Commonwealth Stadium in a JV game against UK's JV's. Goodson returned an interception 54 yards in that game. There was some obvious interest from the Kentucky coaches in other participants, one in particular running back Keiland Williams who posted some eye popping numbers.
"We are sending three player to Florida State and running Mike Ford to Alabama," said Hargrave assistant coach Brian White. "This is my second combine at HMA and this one was deeper in talent than most I'm told.
"I met Joker Phillips last year when he was here recruiting Christian Johnson. I met his brother Micah also last year when he was here visiting his brother and I couldn't get over his size.
Goodson had the second highest vertical jump at the combine, 37 inches – 4.2 Pro-shuttle run; 16 reps of 225-pounds on the bench which equates to 337-pounds if maxed-out 1 time; 4.64 in the 40-yard dash. Coach brooks stated last spring that more emphasis is being placed on the vertical jump because it measures explosion especially for defensive players and how they explode through a tackle. Goodson measured 6-foot-2, 210-pounds.
Drake's numbers: 6-foot-6, 225-pounds; 4.7 40-yard dash; 10 reps on the bench; 32.5 vertical; and 4.22 Pro shuttle.
Coach white said that they have 18 players doing to Dl schools with another 12 to 15 other with offers. Ole Miss seemingly made a haul because they had 4 behemoths from the state of Mississippi committed to them.
