Ormerod, the 2005 Kentucky Miss Basketball, averaged 5.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game last week in helping the Cats to three consecutive wins. UK is off to its best start (8-0) since the 1980-81 season after defeating North Carolina A&T, Georgetown and Detroit. The first-year floor leader dished out a career-high seven assists vs. the Aggies of A&T and followed that performance with five assists against Georgetown. She tied her personal best with five rebounds vs. Detroit.
Through eight games, Ormerod averages 8.6 points per game for the Wildcats and is the team's assists leader, averaging 3.75 dishes per game. She is tied for ninth in the SEC in assists per game as well as assist-to-turnover ratio with 30 assists compared to just 18 turnovers (1.67). She has started in all eight games this season and leads the league in three-point field goal percentage, having connected on 57.9 percent (11-of-19) of her shots from beyond the arc.
This is the first year the SEC has recognized a Freshman of the Week award. The weekly award is the first for the Wildcats since Jan. 17, 2005 when center Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) was named the league's Player of the Week.
Kentucky has this week off for finals before returning to action against conference foe and No. 3 LSU on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST in Memorial Coliseum. The game will be carried live on Fox Sports Net South and aired on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio).
