Lineup shakeup sparks UK women to 81-75 win

OXFORD, Miss - The UK women's team defeated Ole Miss 81-75 behind 19 points by Jenny Pfeiffer off the bench, including 9-9 from the free throw line. Nastassia Alcius chipped in with 16, 14 coming in the first half, and Sarah Elliott grabbed a double-double with 15 points, 13 rebounds in the victory. Samantha Mahoney also added 15 points to the cause.

Following UK's disappointing loss to Auburn in its last game out, Coach Mickie DeMoss apparently thought the lineup needed a little shaking up. Starting Nastassia Alcius and bringing Jenny Pfeiffer off the bench paid dividends in big ways, with Alcius responding with 14 huge first-half points, and Pfeiffer knocking down 19 off the bench, including a perfect 9-9 from the free throw stripe, many of them late in the game. The lineup change resulted in UK scoring a whopping 50 points off the bench.

The first half was a game of runs, with UK rushing to a double digit lead on the heels of an 11-0 run, followed by an Ole Miss 12-0 run to retake the lead. UK closed the first half on a 12-2 run, with four consecutive possessions resulting in 3-points each--3-point baskets by Alcius, Pfeiffer and Mahoney, and an "old-fashioned" 3-point play from Elliott for UK to take a 43-34 halftime lead.

Ole Miss would cut into the UK lead in the 2nd half, though, and took the lead at 54-53 with almost 12 minutes to play. The lead woudl be short-lived, however, as two consecutive jumpers by Elliott gave UK a 57-56 lead that it would never relinquish.

Kentucky hit 90% from the free throw line (26-29), led by Pfeiffer's 9-9 performance. The 'Cats hit 12 consecutive free throws in the last 1:24 of the game (eight by Pfeiffer) as Ole Miss resorted to fouling late to get the ball back.

Kentucky moves to 14-4 (3-2) with the victory, while Ole Miss falls to 11-7 (1-4). Kentucky returns to action Thursday when it hosts No. 1 Tennessee in Rupp Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio and television).
