ELDRIDGE: '08 Kentucky wing getting attention

A hot name in recruiting circles is Scotty Hopson. Hopson, a 6-foot-5 wing player, is receiving attention from all over the college basketball recruiting world. A Hopkinsville (Ky.) native, Hopson plays his high school basketball at University Heights Academy.

Hopson, however, has been making a name for himself through his AAU team, the Midstate Ballerz. "We've got the top team in Tennessee," said Jeremy Schulman. "Scotty's our most talented player," added Schulman. Hopson's ability has drawn the eye of several division one programs.

He currently holds offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi St, Clemson, Georgia and Memphis. After his efforts at the Deal on the Hill in Arkansas and Kingwood in Houston, Hopson turned more heads. "Texas watched him in Houston, and Reggie Hanson (Kentucky) was supposed to see him there too," said the coach. He's had an unofficial visit to Mississippi St, and he had to cancel unofficials to Clemson and Tennessee.

Hopson's versatility and his size for his position are major strengths. "He handles it well. He can play the two or the three. He shoots the three pointer well, but if you crowd him, he'll blow right by for the mid range shot, or the finish at the rim," Schulman said.

All of Hopson's strengths weren't apparent to the onlookers in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Hopson only started one varsity game last year for University Heights. In that one game, he poured in 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Every night wasn't as glamorous for the rising junior. There were times in which Hopson played on Univeristy Heights' Junior Varsity team this past season. Lack of exposure hasn't stopped Hopson's rise to becoming one of the best players in the class of 2008.

Hopson may play at ABCD Camp or Nike Camp, but at this time, there is no decision made. He'll continue his busy summer at a whole host of events, including the Orlando Super Showcase, Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions, and the 16 and Under Nationals in Little Rock Arkansas.
