UK to face MAC Champions Ball State Cardinals

The Kentucky Wildcats (42-15) baseball team will face the red-hot MAC Champions Ball State Cardinals (37-20) in the opening round of the NCAA baseball tournament regional held in Lexington. Ball State has won 16 of its last 18 contests, including the MAC tournament championship Saturday.

Yesterday, Kentucky received the expected confirmation that the team made the NCAA tournament, and the hoped-for news that they would be hosting a first-round NCAA regional. Today the NCAA tournament brackets were revealed, including a first day matchup between Kentucky (# 1 seed) and Ball State (# 4 seed). Other teams in Kentucky's regional include # 2 College of Charleston (43-15) and # 3 Notre Dame (43-15-1).

In addition to red-hot Ball State, both College of Charleston and Notre Dame are on a roll as well, with all three opponents winning their conference tournaments. College of Charleston defeated The Citadel in their championship game Saturday, and placed five players on the all-tournament team, including co-MVP's Nick Chigges and Jess Easterling.

Notre Dame concluded pre-NCAA tournament play by winning its fifth consecutive Big East Tournament this week. Notre Dame was keyed by a strong pitching performance in tournament play, including a team E.R.A. of 3.68, striking out 40 in 44 innings, which included a shutout over Louisville in the championship game.

Games will begin Friday, June 2nd, and continue through Sunday, June 4th, with a possible game on Monday, June 5th.
