While college coaches couldn't attend the NBPA Camp in Richmond two weeks ago, they certainly heard about Jai Lucas' play. The 5-10, 147-pound PG out of Bellaire (TX) High looked great running the point and led his team to the championship.
Lucas, who receives an average 75 text messages a day, said his
recruitment is at a high and he's hearing from schools from all over
"Sometimes you get tired of it, but its part of the process and you
have to get used to it. The good thing about text messaging is you
don't have to reply sometimes so it's better than being on the phone
where you have to talk back."
"It's going good," Lucas said of his recruitment. "It's starting to
pick up a lot after NBA camp. I think I played okay at NBA camp and
everybody heard about it so they started to come around."
While the action is heating up with Lucas, there hasn't been a change
in his top five schools. The major players for Lucas are Kentucky, LSU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Maryland.
Lucas has taken unofficial visits to Maryland, LSU and said that he has
seen plenty of Oklahoma State. When he visited LSU he got to watch one
of the best college games of the year.
"It was one of the best college games I've been to," he said. "It was
just a great experience. Both teams played hard, it was just big
Kentucky is a school that has been on his trail since Nike Camp last
year and they are a school that Lucas said will definitely get a visit.
"I just like the whole fan atmosphere and the intensity," Lucas said
about the Wildcats. "It's big basketball. It seems like in Kentucky
everybody loves basketball. I come from Texas and that's a football
state so that would be a 360 turn. I love playing basketball in front
of atmospheres like that."
While Kentucky is among his top five he said that he doesn't have any
favorites and he is still open to new schools. After Nike Camp Lucas
will play with the Houston Hoops at the Peach Jam.
Kentucky remains among the top five for Lucas
