KENNY WALKER: SEC no breeze for Kentucky

Kentucky's schedule is great leading into the SEC. Playing another winnable game against Houston will give the guys more confidence before SEC play begins. But the bad news is that the SEC is a tough league. I remember when I was a freshman and sophomore and we had Bowie and Turpin. I thought we would just breeze through the SEC after taking on Louisville and Indiana and other teams. I was wrong.

One year we got beat at Auburn and then went to Florida and got beat and started 0-2 in the SEC with Bowie and Turpin and that year we went to the Final Four. Now the SEC is even tougher, and you better treat it that way. Everybody knows how you play and what to expect. You have to realize things will be very tough when you start SEC play.

It's going to be very tough for Kentucky to even win the SEC Eastern Division this year. Florida is obviously the best team, but I have also been very impressed with Tennessee and Georgia. It is always tough to beat South Carolina. I think Georgia will be the darkhorse of the whole SEC, not just the SEC East.

It will be very difficult for Kentucky to win the SEC East, but they could. They have to get one of those top two positions to get that first night off in the SEC Tournament. That is the most important goal.

I will give my pick to win the whole SEC to Florida by just a little bit because I saw what the Gators did to Ohio State. Obviously Florida is also the defending national champion. But I wouldn't put Alabama too far behind because I think Alabama is really good as well. They have a very athletic front line with Alonzo Gee, Jermareo Davidson and Richard Hendrix. They are big guys that really play big and they have a point guard (Ronald Steele) that was a preseason All-American and is really a good player to run a team. They have all the ingredients to be there at the end. I would not be surprised to see Alabama take the overall title.

Kentucky could still get there, but the Cats would really have to play well and probably get some help from a few other teams if they were to win it all.
