VAUGHT: Giving some love to the Wildcats

With all the hoopla being generated by Billy Gillispie's non-stop recruiting, it's easy to forget that the start of Kentucky's football season is less than two months away. Well, maybe it's not easy for me to forget that, but for some fans it is. However, when I needed by football fix again, I just pulled out the copy of the Birmingham News Preview that KSR member Mick Murrell sent me.

I like to keep looking at that section because of the love it gives the Wildcats.

First, the SEC East's sports information directors predicted UK to finish fourth in the division. Not fifth like most preseason publications, but fourth. This poll has UK picked ahead of South Carolina — and I think the sports information directors are going to be right.

Next, it gives all-SEC first team honors to linebacker Wesley Woodyard and rates him as the BEST outside linebacker in the conference. Say amen Big Blue fans for having someone recognize that UK does have talent on defense.

Next, it has tight end Jacob Tamme as a first-team pick and receiver Keenan Burton and running back Rafael Little as second-team choice. While I would put Burton and Little on my first team, I can live with second-team preseason recognition.

But what I really like best is the attention Andre Woodson receives. Not only is he the obvious choice as the first-team quarterback, but he is also rated the league's most underrated player. While those two honors would not seem to go together, that's life as the quarterback at Kentucky.

However, the poll also picked Woodson as the league's best leader and passer. Obviously, the SEC sports information directors know football. They recognize UK has talent and that there is no reason the Wildcats shouldn't finish ahead of South Carolina in the Eastern Division.
