Warren is as outspoken as he is talented, causing some to think that he is direct while others have accused him of being somewhat pompous. In either case, when the game is over, the microphones get shoved in his face almost immediately.
"We lost our legs," Warren said of the win, a game that Team Texas gave up all but one of a 22 point lead before pulling it out at the end. "We played tired. We couldn't even hit our free throws at the end."
With regard to his recruiting, Warren has made frequent quotes about his lists of schools and their order, often contradicting himself in the process. But Warren takes a little exception to those accusations. "I get asked the same questions over and over and over," Warren said, "Newspapers, TV stations, radio stations, recruiting services. It's not that I am changing, it's just that the mind sometimes just goes numb and you can leave someone out or change the order. Just because I forget to say a school's name after I have answered the same question multiple times, doesn't mean I am not considering them."
And as often as Willie gets asked about his school lists, he gets almost that many questions about whether he'd consider a package deal with AAU teammate Rotnei Clark, "Rotnei would be a great guy to play with but neither of us are going out of our way to make it happen," Warren said, "We have some schools in common. If it happens it happens, and that would be great, but if I decide to go one place and Rotnei has another school that he thinks is a better fit for him, he will not hesitate to go elsewhere. Neither will I. We are both looking for the best fit we can find."
"There are several things I am looking for," Warren said, "Style of play is something I am looking at strongly. I am a run and gun kind of player, and I feel like I need to be part of a program that really likes to get up and down the court. And I am looking for playing time. I am not knocking guys that go to North Carolina or anything, but they get 4-5 McDonald's all-Americans every year, all looking to play. I don't want to go someplace where I can't make an immediate impact. I want to go someplace and play 15 minutes a game. I want a shot at playing all forty."
But Warren made it clear that he wants to play with great talent, "I am being recruited a lot as a point guard, but I want the other guards to be just as good at handling the ball as I am. That will free me up to do other things. But I see myself as a point guard in the NBA so I expect to get a lot of time in college at that position." One reporter asked if there have been any surprises in the process. To that Warren said, "The biggest surprise to me is that some coaches automatically think I am a one and done or a two and gone player. They come up to me and tell me that it's ok to be that way. But what I really want to hear is a coach telling me what I need to do to get to the next level. They keep telling me how good I am. I know I am good. I want to hear what they think I can do to improve."
"Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Louisville, and Cincinnati – those are my top five," said Warren, "Oklahoma is at the top of my list right now. I think I can get the playing time and I like their style of play and their coaching style. Marquette, Kentucky and Arizona are schools I am also considering but right now they are not in my top five. I am going to try to make visits to Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati on my way to Oak Hill this fall but that is not in stone."
Warren suggested that schools outside his top five could move up his list, "I respect the coaches that come after me hard," he said, "it lets me know they really want me. And some of the schools in my top five have started to slack off a little. I don't know, maybe they think they already have me"
"So you want them to work hard for you?" asked one reporter. "Absolutely," replied Warren, "they have to be nice to me now. But I know they aren't going to be nice to me when I get on the team."
Willie Warren said the player whose style he most wants to emulate was one of the following:
