VAUGHT: Lyons impossible not to like

It's impossible not to like Kentucky junior receiver Dicky Lyons Jr. I know he sometimes can drive his coaches crazy with his outrageous comments or route running, but he's a confident player who believes in his team as well as his own ability.

Better yet, he can make plays as shown by his 50 catches for 822 yards and nine touchdowns last year. However, he can also poke fun at himself — or even his head coach — in the right way.

Remember last year when Lyons got into coach Rich Brooks' doghouse for guaranteeing a win at Mississippi State and providing what Brooks felt was unwanted bulletin board material for the Bulldogs before Kentucky did win?

Now Lyons thinks Brooks is providing bulletin board material of his own to UK opponents. Or at least that's what he said when I asked him what he thought about the theory that UK might be better this year but the record wouldn't reflect that because of a brutal schedule.

"That's what I joke about. I gave bulletin board to Mississippi State last year. Hey, all the media (predictions), that is just bulletin board material with them still not respecting us. Put that on the bulletin board," Lyons said. "I was joking with coach Brooks. I saw him at SEC Media Day and he was saying we are going to be a better team and compete for the SEC title. I said, ‘That's bulletin board (material) for those other teams. You better watch out.'"

Did Lyons want to make him for those comments?

"No, I let him off easy. I am getting soft in my old age," Lyons laughed.

It's not soft. It's mature and that attitude is just another reason why the Cats should have such a potent offense this year.
