Kentucky offensive tackle Justin Jeffries is a Louisville St. Xavier product and knows better than even to suggest Saturday's game against Louisville is "just another game" for Kentucky or Louisville.
"The hype is going to build it up with me being from Louisville. Last year we came out kind of slow. We have to flip that and come out fast and ready to play this year because this is a game both teams really want to win. You want to win every game, but this is one you really want to win," Jeffries said.
He's expecting to see a much more physical, aggressive Louisville defense than the one that the Cardinals had against Middle Tennessee last week.
"I am expecting them to bring their ‘A' game on defense just like we are on offense," Jeffries said. "They are a top 10 team, so they have to be pretty good. I have watched them a couple of time, and they really are a darn good team.
"There's no joking around this week. It is Louisville week. We have a pretty good offense backed up by a good defense. I think we have an all-around good team that can win if we play well. I have great confidence that our defense will play well. We don't have to try and outscore their offense to win."
Even though Louisville is a top 10 team, many UK fans are predicting a victory for Louisville. Is that wishful thinking or would fans be as optimistic against any top 10 team?
"I am not sure. I think when you go out with the mindset to play your best football, you have a chance to beat anybody because it is college football. Our fans are giving us a chance, but if we don't come out prepared, that chance is going to be wasted," Jeffries said.
He has a couple of friends on the team, including freshman running back Vic Anderson, another St. Xavier product.
"I wish them luck and tell them we will be ready for them," Jeffries said.
But does he wish them good luck or bad luck in this game?
"Always good luck, but this is one week I don't mind if they don't get any of that good luck," he said.
