Mahoney leads Cats to 61-53 win over FAU

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Samantha Mahoney scored 19 points, and Victoria Dunlap grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Kentucky to a 61-53 victory over Florida Atlantic University. Kentucky jumped to a 12-point halftime lead, which helped them overcome 3-25 (12%) shooting in the 2nd half and manage the win.

The game featured a return to Kentucky of a basketball player named "Givens"--this time, former UK All-American Jack "Goose" Givens' daughter, Jaimie--and she quickly made her presence known. Givens scored five of FAU's first 11 points, and FAU jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first four minutes. On the day, she finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocked shots.

The Cats bounced back, and moved out to a 15-point lead with 2:31 remaining in the half before settling for a 35-23 lead at halftime.

The game was very defense-oriented, with the Cats' Mahoney the only player in double figures for Kentucky. UK's defense forced FAU into 26 turnovers, and a tenacious FAU defense held Kentucky to only 28.8% field goal shooting for the game, including 3-25 (12%) in the second half. The Cats also managed only five assists for the game, but went to the free throw line 40 times, making 25. Victoria Dunlap's tough play underneath made her a prime target, and in addition to grabbing 13 rebounds, she also went 7-12 from the free throw line, narrowly missing a double-double with nine points, 13 rebounds.

The win moves Kentucky to 2-1 on the young season, while Florida Atlantic drops to 1-2. Kentucky will travel to Honolulu next to play in the Rainbow Classic, where they will face Minnesota at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
