Todd "pleased" with Gillispie

Lee Todd was interviewed for an upcoming KSR magazine feature. In that interview Todd said of Gillispie, "He gets emotional very easily. He can hardly talk about fan base without getting tears in his eyes. He is the kind of person you want in that position."

Kentucky president Dr. Lee Todd is a both a fan and a realist. He wants to see all the UK sports teams do well, but he also tries to be realistic in his expectations. He shared his thoughts with KSR in an upcoming magazine feature.

Here are two excerpts from the Q&A that will be in the next magazine.

Question: How about the way Billy Gillispie is putting his program together?

Todd: "It's really tough to rebuild a football program because you have so many players. In basketball you have fewer players and can find one or two stars and maybe turn around quicker. But it is so competitive now. The game has changed a lot since we won our seven championships.

"You won't find anybody more competitive than Billy Gillispie. You won't find anybody who recruits harder or has more knowledge about the potential recruits than what Billy has. He will do fine. I am pleased to have him here. I love his energy. There was a game last year when we played some of the best basketball I have seen in Rupp Arena in many years. It will be exciting and fun with him. He's a small town guy trying to get used to a big-time program. He is so focused on basketball that he will get us there.

Question: Do you think he has developed a more genuine passion for Kentucky as well?

Todd: "He really has. I jokingly tell him that we both grew up in the same kind of town. We both had a water tower and a pool room and that was about it. For me to be thinking president of UK is a hard thing to comprehend but it doesn't get as much attention as being coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He had that chance to get used to that. But then he has traveled around the state and he has just marveled at how much support there is and how much love there is for this team. He can hardly talk about. He gets emotional very easily. He can hardly talk about fan base without getting tears in his eyes. He is the kind of person you want in that position."
