Liggins, Miller need to step it up

Would it help Kentucky more in March if Perry Stevenson is scoring consistently or if either DeAndre Liggins or Darius Miller has developed into a consistent scorer?

Actually, both options are pretty good. I have confidence that Perry can come around and be the third scorer that Kentucky needs. But I think for this team to do well in March and be a good tournament team, it needs Miller and Liggins to play better. They need Liggins to make better decisions when he comes into the game and when he is running the team. He has been a little too offensive minded even though he did pick up his defense against Vanderbilt. He has to get teammates involved. If he can do that, he can be a big help to this team.

And you talk about a guy who can fill the void of a third scorer, even though we haven't seen it yet, Miller has all kinds of potential. His biggest thing is mentally with his confidence. Every time he gets in the game he seems to have an open 3-point shot, but that's not the shot he should be taking. You have to try and get something going to the basket to get your confidence going. If he can see that ball go through the basket a few times, I think he could become a reliable third scorer. But he has to get his confidence up to fill that void.

Patterson and Meeks are having great years, but they are not doing enough leadership wise at this stage. I love both of them. You are not going to find two guys in Kentucky history having a better season than they are having, but neither one is at the point where they are the vocal leaders you want them to be. They lead by example and do all the right things on and off the court, but it is important that they give that strong voice on the team that is not the coach. Those guys may not have that in them now, but if they both stick around it is something they will develop and that will help a lot.

Leadership doesn't just happen. It develops more in the offseason pickup games and things you do together. It's not something you can just turn on and off. It develops over time. I would love to have Porter to have the role Roger Harden had with our team. Roger was not a big scorer, but he hung out with us and he was a leader on the court an doff. Kentucky needs that one guy, or maybe two, to step up and provide that leadership that is not there right now.
