Kentucky targets Classic backcourt players

Kentucky fans will be watching with great interest when Scout's #1 point guard John Wall, and #1 shooting guard Xavier Henry play in the same backcourt together in the Jordan Brand Classic. With both Wall and Henry considering Kentucky the Wildcat faithful hope this will not be the only time they are able to witness the guard duo team together in the backcourt.

Fans will not be tuning into the game just to watch Kentucky's two prized post players in action, as a couple of backcourt players Kentucky is pursuing will be playing in the game as well.

The two players that Kentucky fans will be most focused on are a couple of top guards; Scout's #1 point guard John Wall and the #1 rated shooting guard Xavier Henry.

The recruitment of these two players may be winding down faster than many believe.

Earlier this week ESPN's Chris Lawler reported that in regards to Kentucky Henry stated, "I don't know anything about the program's history, but I do know Calipari is the coach. Cal has a feel for building a program. He makes you already feel a part of the program and wants you to succeed. He'll tell you honestly if you are ready for the NBA."

Lawler reports that after returning home on Sunday Henry is to decide within a week.

There have been many signs of a protracted John Wall recruitment, but this one also appears to be winding down. While the talk is about narrowing down and eliminating schools, it is pretty obvious that there are not as many players in the Wall game as are being mentioned. Keep in mind that earlier this week Wall mentioned that since the dead period ended last weekend he had only spoken to Kentucky's John Calipari, and the Billy come lately to the race, Florida's Billy Donovan.

There are rumblings that Wall has made a decision, and will be making an announcement in the near future. These rumblings have been given some justification by a comment by Brian Clifton, which appeared on Zagsblog. Clifton, Wall's AAU coach, advisor and confidant said of a decision, "It really could happen at any time."

Wall and Henry have been paired together in the backcourt on the same team in which Daniel Orton will play. Could UK fans be getting a glimpse of the near future when the trio is in the game together? While DeMarcus Cousins will be facing Orton, Henry and Wall on the court at the Jordan Brand Classic, off the court he is working to get Henry and Wall to join him at Kentucky and play for Calipari, just as they had planned when Calipari was at Memphis.

In analyzing the recruitment of Henry and Wall it is the belief of this writer that they will both ultimately choose to attend Kentucky. When both players mention Kentucky they do so with the primary focus being the presence of John Calipari. Calipari's record as a straight shooter, who gives his players honest evaluations regarding their NBA readiness; and his recent track record of not only getting players to the NBA in short order, but encouraging them to leave early when he feels they will be drafted highly are huge selling points for a couple of kids who are looking at spending only one or two seasons in college.

In addition to Wall and Henry another Kentucky guard prospect will be playing in the Classic is Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe has quickly risen in the rankings and appears to be an option if Wall does not choose Kentucky.

The Jordan Brand Classic will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 8:00 pm EST tonight.
