Calipari logging lots of recruiting miles

The image to the left reminds me of the Uncle Sam poster with the caption "I want you." John Calipari, despite a full schedule of late that has included many media appearances, has criss-crossed the country on the recruiting trail. While Calipari looks to wrap up the 2009 class in the near future he is also looking toward the 2010 class.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has criss-crossed the country looking for a few good men, or perhaps more appropriately phrased "a few great players."

As Kentucky fans anxiously await the conclusion of the class of '09, with the tantalizing thoughts of guys like John Wall, Xavier Henry & brother C.J., and Eric Bledsoe decked out in UK blue filling their minds, recruiting is quickly picking up with the class of 2010.

A week ago Calipari reported on the Big Blue Line that juniors are calling Kentucky, asking to be recruited. Which juniors rise to the top of a group that at this point will be expected to fill a number of slots will occur over the coming weeks and possibly into the summer recruiting periods.

Some names are already coming to the surface.

The word on the street is that Calipari has jumped into the Harrison Barnes sweepstakes, and a likley trip to Ames was on tap for today. The 6-6 Barnes was a one time recruit of the previous Kentucky staff, and is being tracked by a plethora of big time programs, which are extending offers.

In an interview with Memphis White Station point guard Joe Jackson told Eric Bossi in regards to Kentucky, "I know that they are going to come in hard. They said that I'm their number one recruit in 2010."

Jackson has some serious hops for his size and got up for some big time jams according to several Scout sources in attendance at the Real Deal this past weekend.

The focus of the fans remains the class of '09.

Adam Zagoria spoke to John Wall about his intentions to cut down his list this week. Wall told Zagoria he will likely cut the list down once he returns from Miami after this weekend.

Despite the rumors that Wall is going to visit North Carolina this week Wall continues to maintain a list of Kentucky, Florida, Duke, Baylor, Miami, Memphis, N.C. State and Kansas; UNC remains absent from the list.

In regards to Kentucky, Wall said, "I'm not going to visit there but I'm still thinking about going there." Wall has previously visited Kentucky, including making the trip for last fall's Big Blue Madness, and is well versed in what the Wildcats have to offer in terms of facilties and academic support services. Wall also made an unofficial visit to Kentucky as a junior.

Xavier and C.J. Henry may or may not be visiting Kentucky this weekend. Xavier's prom is Friday night and the two may visit Saturday, or they may not per their father Carl, according to what the elder Henry told Jerry Tipton.

One interesting Carl Henry quote caught my attention. "I put it to my sons this way," Henry said to Tipton. "You went to Memphis because of Coach Cal. You liked his style."

Author's note: It kind of sounds like Carl is saying if his sons liked Calipari's style enough to cause them to choose Memphis, then it should be enough to cause them to choose Kentucky. The elder Henry has a relationship with Calipari that goes back to his playing days at Kansas, when Calipari was an assistant on the staff of former KU coach Larry Brown.

Calipari is also still in pursuit of Eric Bledsoe, and recently visited the point guard.

With final exams quickly approaching (it is hard to believe that May will soon arrive), we are getting close to the time of year when some transfers make their intentions known. Kentucky has some rumored departures.

Could the Wildcats also pursue some of the departures from other schools if the scholarships are available? With what appears to be a significant number of 2010 openings bringing in a few experienced players after sitting out a year may not be a bad thing.
