VAUGHT: Blue-White Blog/Notes

Talked to a source who told me when Morgan Newton and his family met with Brooks this weekend the message was simple: "Get ready." Brooks told the Newtons that Morgan absolutely had a chance to be the starter and we all know Brooks does not play mind games with kids.

Larry Vaught Shorts:

Briefly saw Qua Huzzie, Dakotah Tyler, Morgan Newton, Ryan Mossakowsi and Terrell MItchell. They all are so anxious to be here and play. Was impressive to see them, and a lot more

know Hartline is facing the better defense today, but he continues to struggle with his playmaking. I still know I am in the minority, but I would not rule out Newton playing very, very early. And RB Coshik Williams continues to impress me as he has all spring

Brooks left no doubt about his major concern coming out of spring practice. It's replacing kicker Tim Masthay, an academic All-American who consistently put kickoffs into the end zone. "Field position has been our friend in recent years, but it could be our enemy," Brooks said. "We may have to get creatives in our kickoffs." Walk-on Pat Simmons boomed the opening kickoff almost out of the end zone with a big wind behind him. "He has the best hang time and distance. He doesn't have the strongest leg, but he had kicked higher and farther than anybody else," Brooks said. Punter Ryan Tydlacka and field goal kicker Lones Seiber might also get a chance to kick off in the fall.

Joker literally joked that the offense had 15 straight good practices for one reason. "I love open practices. You can't tell family and friends that you are not getting a chance when everyone can see you drop passes or make mistakes. Open practices motivate guys to play their best. I wish they all were open," Phillips said.

Trevathan is so fast that he returned a kickoff 31 yards in the spring game. "How long has it been since Kentucky had a linebacker fast enough to return kickoffs?" Brooks said. "We graduated some good linebackers but as good as those two were, these two had a great spring. Trevathan can really run. He still has things to learn, but he's a playmaker."

Injury update: Brooks was perhaps more pleased with the game's short injury list than anything else. Four players -- receiver E.J. Adams (strained knee), running backs Alfonso Smith (arch) and Coshik Williams (shoulder), and linebacker Danny Trevathan (hip pointer) -- were hurt in the game. "From that standpoint, it is the best spring we have had. No serious injuries that will put people in jeopardy of missing this fall," the UK coach said.

Got to talk to the UK president today for a few minutes. Couple of interesting notes.
1. He read my recent column explaining all the clauses in Calipari's contract regarding compliance and thanked me for taking time to make sure everyone knew that.
2. INitial meeting with Calipari was in Chicago. What we all suspected, but never knew for sure.
3. Mitch wanted Calipari from the start. Todd had to be convinced, but said Mitch would not give up.
4. During the interview, Cal shared some interesting and funny stories about the potential rivalry with Pitino that Todd really liked.

Coach Cal thrilled fans when he stopped to sign autographs and talk. Pat showing Dodson around and two seem to be hitting it off well. Fans are so enthusiastic around Cal. And I loved when fans were chanting and lined up telling Patterson to come back for another year. Cal also made the rounds in the pressbox and shook every hand here
