The Matt Pilgrim story - PART FIVE

Larry Vaught recently interviewed Matt Pilgrim for Kentucky Sports Report, the magazine. Follow this young man's story throughout the week in this five part series. Bonus coverage tomorrow!

It's no wonder Kentucky fans are talking almost as much about Pilgrim as the returning players. Seldom has a transfer created the buzz he has.

"I hear people say that he is better than I thought he was and things like that. I don't pay that much attention." Pilgrim laughed and said. "I have seen people get hyped up with all the glitz and glamour when they come in and then I have seen them fail, too. I don't want to be that dude.

"I try to be outgoing all the time. I am not overwhelmed by much. This is something I want here, so I am going to go get it. I am not going to fail."

Recruit Vinny Zollo, a sophomore at George Rogers Clark in Winchester (Ky.) who has verbally committed to UK, got to see a pickup game with Pilgrim. He came away impressed and almost in awe of his skills.

"I heard a good deal about Pilgrim since he is from Cincinnati," Zollo, who moved from Ohio to Winchester this summer, said. "Once he came to Kentucky, I heard all this hype about him. But he's really a great player. He has a real high basketball IQ. He's big and strong. I think he'll be extremely good and be a teammate anyone would want to have."
