June Magazine Preview: Jon Hood

The following is a small excerpt from a feature article in Kentucky Sports Report's June issue. The full article appears in the magazine and will be on newsstands in mid-June. Hood averaged 28.7 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.1 blocked shots, 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

He averaged 28.7 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.1 blocked shots, 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 50 percent from the field, 73 percent at the foul line and 30 percent from 3-point range. Still, his team finished the season only 11-13 and for the second straight year his season was cut short by an injury.

If that wasn't enough frustration, he also had to cope with Billy Gillispie being fired as Kentucky's basketball coach. He signed with the Wildcats in November anticipating he would play for Gillispie and held out hope to the end that Gillispie would be back this year. However, he's now eager to get a chance to play for new UK coach John Calipari.

"He said I was the shooter/scorer/slasher that he never got to Memphis," Hood said. "As a player, that has to excite you when a coach like John Calipari tells you that. He likes to run and he likes to guys to get out on the break and finish. That does fit my game. I think it is still going to be a good fit for me at Kentucky."
