Kentucky fans have a glint in their eye and a skip to their step like we haven't seen since 1998, when Tubby Smith guided a team of unlikely heroes all the way to a national championship. While Calipari has yet to coach a single minute of play at Kentucky, the fans and national media alike seem more than willing to anoint him as the savior of the Wildcats basketball program.

It would be easy to say that such euphoria is due to the marriage of such a strong name in coaching with such a historic program; or that Calipari is simply looking like a rock star when compared to the quirky and profoundly unlovable Billy Gillispie. On Gillispie's short watch, after all, an already stagnant Wildcats program slid from the level of perennial early-round NCAA Tournament knockout to a mediocre NIT team.
