John Calipari didn't tell DeMarcus Cousins he was a great player destined for stardom. Instead, the University of Kentucky coach took a different approach to recruiting Cousins, one of the nation's top prep players, that Cousins' mother liked.

"I like his directness. He ws very blunt about what he is looking for," said Monique Cousins. "I just like his frankness. It was a breath of fresh air.

"He was not just wrapped up in DeMarcus' talent and how great a player he was. He was saying there was room for improvement. A lot of times poeple do not go there. They try to recruit by saying how great a player he and do all those things to just make you feel good.

"Then you get to the school and it is totally different. Coach Calipari was saying this is what we will do and what you need to work on. As a mother, I appreciated that. It made me see him more as a father figure than anything else and let me know he'll take care of my son."
