Two weeks ago Matt Pilgrim was reported to have had his scholarship revoked by Kentucky's John Calipari. KSR's Larry Vaught spoke to Pilgrim's father at the time and the elder Pilgrim confirmed that his son's scholarship had been revoked.
That was then.
This is now.
Pilgrim was recently spotted on campus, playing pickup games with current Wildcats during a father-son camp I contacted the University regarding Pilgrim.
When asked if Pilgrim was trying to earn his way back on to the team Kentucky's SID DeWayne Peevy was very non-committal and said that Pilgrim is on campus enrolled in summer school. When asked if it is normal for a player that is going to transfer to another school to attend summer school at the school he is leaving Peevy replied, "I can't speculate on what's normal, but this is not news in athletics."
I'm not sure what Peevy meant by the statement, but there is some ambiguity to this statement, just as there was when I enquired about the future of Billy Gillispie on the eve of the announcement he would not be returning to UK as coach for 2009-2010. I sense there is more to the story.
I do not know of any players who are transferring to another school who attend summer classes at the school they are leaving. Most players who are transferring would either be looking for their future school at this point in time, or have already made their move and enrolled at their new institution.
With Matt no longer on scholarship, attending UK's summer school, and working with the team during the camps one cannot help but wonder if there is a chance that Pilgrim is seeking to work his way back on to the team, in some capacity.
It should be noted that there has yet to be an official announcement from Kentucky on Pilgrim's departure. It has been two weeks since Peevy indicated to some media outlets that a roster was being prepared for release. It certainly doesn't take this long to compile a list of players for next year's roster. There must be something holding the process up at this time. Could that holdup be Pilgrim's status?
I directed this query to Peevy, "DeWayne, I noted that there was never a release on Pilgrim and Galloway leaving the team. Is Pilgrim definitely leaving for another school?"
The UK SID replied, "We have not sent out a release regarding our roster since May 26th."
I could not help but note that the question regarding Pilgrim's future at UK remains unanswered.
Pilgrim going, going, .. still at UK?
