In speaking of Alfonso Smith's progress, coach Phillips wants it known publicly where and what he see's in a running back the teams will be depending on this season.

"His feet are fine," Phillips clearly stated. "It's just lack of conditioning. He missed a few practices in the last couple of days. The pool workouts don't get you in football shape. The only thing that gets you in football shape is being out there runnning wind-sprints with the football team and running plays with them, also. And he's a little out of conditioning.

Phillips said that Mike Hartline is handling the offense well in making the right throws and there are guys that are making plays on the peremiter and that, he said, is important, also. "It's allowing us to run the football as well as we are doing and we are running the football pretty good right now."

Phillips was asked how many backs does he see in the rotation right now? "In this league we've never had big physical backs, we've got to be ready to go into this league with three or four backs. That's been our plan the whole time we've been here. We feel good about the first three backs and hoping that Coshik Williams continues to come and we've got to get one of the freshman backs ready, too because you've got to have at least five of those backs ready when they are that size." Pillips said Williams runs the ball really well. He can see and is as good a natural runner as I've ever seen. "The thing that Coshil needs to do is he needs to be able to pick up the blitz's. He needs to continue show us that he understands pass protection and how to pick them up.

Who was some of the young player that impressed today? Phillips said - "You know, I watched the line a lot more today and I keep seeing, especially on the goal line, Dave Ulinski was just collapsing the right side of the line. We are getting more and more excited about him.....Will Fidler continues to do some good things....LaRod King is making a strong case for himself to be a guy that can get on the bus - what we think is he's tough enough to play some of the special teams....Another guy that I saw make a couple of plays that we've been waiting to come is E. J. Fields, made a play on covering a kick, which was big in my opinion and that's what the fifth receiver has to be able to do, has to be a guy that can play special teams and then he made a play on offense on a fade route."
