Kentucky native Albert Jackson says the Wildcats deserve all the preseason hype they have received this year.
"They had a great recruiting class and he (John Calipari) is a great coach. Even though I am a Georgia player, I've always said they have a great program," Jackson, a Georgia senior, said. "You can argue it is the best program in all of college basketball. All the attention they get is very deserved. We will see how the year goes. I am definitely interested to see how the year goes and I am definitely ready to play against them. I hope they do have the No. 1 ranking when they come into our gym. I am excited about going heads up with such a talented team."
He says he knows there is an "ecstatic atmosphere" in Kentucky now because friends and family members in Western Kentucky have told him.
"Everybody is excited and talking Kentucky basketball. I have a lot of friends that are Kentucky fans who support me. I hear both sides. They are ready to go back to the championship. My mom works with a lot of Kentucky fans and she tells me how excited people are."
However, here is what is refreshing about Jackson. He's happy for the Kentucky players.
"It is good for them. I have been in Kentucky when it has been down, and I have been in Kentucky when it has been up. I know how it can be," he said. "It is good that players get to have that support again because for a long time they didn't have it. I know what it is like not to have support and it is tough. I am glad they finally get to have a smile on their face and get to walk around with their heads up and are ready to go again."
Yet he'll be the first to celebrate if the Bulldogs can beat Kentucky.
"They are going to have a target on their back. No, actually they will have a target on their head. Everybody is coming for them. They know that and know what to expect. They know to bring their best game every single night. I expect to get their best when we play them. It is a great thing they are ranked so high because that brings attention to us and the SEC," Jackson said.
"You can say the SEC was a little down last year, but this is a step toward helping to build it back up to being the best conference. I don't like being the second or third best conference. I like being known as the best conference like my freshmen year. I feel this year our league can be the best league because we are getting a lot more attention already thanks to Kentucky."
