If teammate Sam Maxwell had not made 11 tackles, including one at the goal line, and intercepted a pass at Georgia, Kentucky senior tackle Corey Peters likely would have won the SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor that Maxwell got.
Still, Peters' play at Georgia was a big reason why UK won as he had 10 tackles — an extraordinary number for a defensive lineman — and two were tackles for losses.
Coach Rich Brooks went to Peters at halftime and told him he had to be dominant the second half. And he was.
"Corey has almost pulled this team up from the boot straps. His play the last 30 minutes at Georgia was dominant. He killed their offensive line and made plays all over the field," Brooks said. "I have never seen a play like the one where he swatted the ball out of the quarterback's hands on the pitch sweep. He exploded through that gap so quick and beat the guard and center. I have never seen that.
"On the next play he comes around on a stunt and clobbers the quarterback as he throws the ball and there was a receiver open. I will be disappointed if he doesn't get postseason recognition."
What Brooks likes even better is the way Peters plays and conducts himself.
"You could not ask for a more outstanding young man. Academically he has been up in the 3.0 (grade-point) range his whole career. He's going to graduate. He is an outstanding representative for the university and football program. He is soft spoken, has a big heart and is not afraid to speak out and give his opinion. He is not a beat my chest type of guy. He just goes out and makes play and then makes another one."
Brooks proud of Corey Peters
