How important have the contributions of senior Ramon Harris been this season? After what may be the biggest game to date Kentucky coach John Calipari made it a point to give props to the young man.
"How about Ramon Harris," Coach Calipari said in the post North Carolina game press conference. "He turned it over but he is terrific. Calipari said Harris is playing well defensively and "now we just got to fit him in the offense and get him to play in what he is capable of doing. He's the only one that blocks out at that position. The only one that rebounds at that position is Ramon.
We said after the early games in the season that some of the veterans would have to play key roles in this team. Cal said you can't start Perry Stevenson but when he comes off the bench and you catch him on a day he wants to play, he makes a winning contribution.
We asked Harris why coach Cal decided to retain him among the team he took over.
"He said some of the players might not be here so I've just to fulfill my role and do as much as I can," Harris said. "I think he wanted some of the skills that I had and also I could fit in with his style of play."
We asked Harris if he was surprised with the amount of minutes he's getting in the games? He said – "Yeah, it just shows that hard work pays off. This is the funnest team I've been on but it is also time to work."
Harris's mother said the atmosphere is so much different and this is what the college experience is supposed to be about.
Ramon was asked if the coach was surprised at the defense he plays. "I don't know if he is surprised but he is happy so far." We think from what we have witnessed from Harris's that he will be getting quality minutes down the stretch of close ball games. The other value to his game is that he will rise up and stick a three when least expected by the opposing team.
On a team that pre-season was thought to be anemic from the three-point range – and it has yet to establish a consistent three point shooter, but it has done surprisingly better at three-pointers by committee. Since Harris is going to be getting quality time on the floor, he has to be able to utilize his ability to knock down the three point shot. His ability to run the floor and get what Cal calls the fifty-fifty ball also is a strong asset, as well.
Play of Ramon Harris adds value to Cats
