King of Wildcat Scoring: Lones Seiber

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The temperature was cold, and the wind was blowing, and swirling. Clemson's field goal kicker attempted a field goal that popped up, and almost blew back, falling many yards short of its goal. But Kentucky senior kicker Lones Seiber found his mark twice in two attempts, drilling a 39-yard FG and a 44-yard FG in a 21-13 loss to Clemson in the Music City Bowl Sunday.

Seiber, UK's all-time leading scorer, finished his career by connecting on 49-79 (.621) of his field goals. He capped his career with 305 career points after the two field goals and an extra point. UK's all-time leading scorer is also the first Wildcat to cap the 300-point mark.

Seiber's career was filled with ups and downs, but perhaps the biggest kick he made was the 43-yard field goal he canned in the second overtime against # 1 LSU--a team that would go on to win the national championship--in a Wildcat victory over the top-ranked Tigers. ""That was a big kick," Seiber said. "I remember thinking if I make this kick, it's going to set the season for me. That was something I needed."

The two field goals against Clemson were critical points--the first field goal broke a 7-7 tie, giving Kentucky the lead again at 10-7, and the second field goal closed the Clemson lead to 14-13. That score held into the 4th quarter, and with UK on the Clemson side of the field to begin the quarter, a third field goal appeared to be looming for the senior.

The wind was swirling around the goalposts during Seiber's kicks.

Unfortunately, the Cats lost 3-yards on three plays, and had to punt. Although the Cats' defense held, the exchange of punts flipped field position, and when Clemson recovered a UK fumble and scored, the hopes of a Seiber field goal to win the game was dashed.

Seiber ends his career with UK as the all-time leading scorer, and enjoyed a fine senior season, knocking down 11-16 field goals and 40-42 extra points. His 73 points were second only to Randall Cobb's 90 points on 15 touchdowns.
