Josh Selby is the third rated point guard in the nation according to Scout.com. So it's no surprise that he's one of the most highly recruited players in the senior class. Some of the schools who are being considered are Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, Connecticut, Syracuse and Arizona.
Selby and his mother, Maeshon Witherspoon just returned from Arizona this weekend. "It went very well," said Witherspoon. "The weather was great! We got to see them play with a lot of heart and emotion," she said. "They are a young team, but we like how they fought. They looked real good. They played with a lot of pride," she finished.
They also have plans to visit Kansas (February 13th) and Kentucky (March 7th). Witherspoon talked about what they'd be looking for on their visit to Lexington.
"I've seen them on television more than Josh has because he's at practice," she said. " We see how Wall is playing. We want to get a feel of the atmosphere for the fans. We want to establish a better relationship with the coaching staff," she continued.
Previously Selby had been committed to Tennessee, but things changed this summer and recruiting picked up from several directions. So has the recruitment been stressful for Selby and his mother?
"It's not real stressful for Josh. It hasn't been stressful for me. I've been the main one dealing with the coaches. The main thing for Josh is to spend as much time with the players as he can," she said. "He's not a player that wants to talk to the staff as much, because they will tell him what he wants to hear. He thinks the players will tell the truth," she continued.
Aside from spending time with the players, what else is Selby looking to do on his visits? "Obviously the style of play, the team chemistry, and how the coaches interact on and off the court with the players," she said. "We pay attention to how coaches react to mistakes. If it's a family atmosphere. Josh is a family person."
"I'm looking for consistency, so I can feel comfortable enough to turn my son over to the coaching staff and university," she finished.
Whichever school receives the okay from Selby will be receiving an explosive player who can play either guard position. This season he's had to put even more on his plate. "He's been very consistent," she said. "He's asked to do a lot on his team. His numbers have been high, scoring wise," she said.
When asked about his ultimate goal this season, it was simple. "To win a championship," stated Ms. Witherspoon.
