South Carolina tried to hang in there and pulled to within six points of Kentucky on two occasions in the second half but could get no closer. SC's best chance came at the 10:06 mark of the second half. Downey scored to pull the Gamecocks to within six at 52-46. But it was all Kentucky after that.
The Cats shot 50% from the field and 75% from the free throw line, and dominated the Gamecocks on the glass 44-26. Kentucky added eight steals and eight blocked shots and committed just 10 turnovers.
With the win, #2-ranked Kentucky moves to 27-1 (12-1 SEC) and remains two full games ahead of Vanderbilt for the overall SEC regular season title. Vandy won a tough overtime game over Georgia tonight to keep it close.
Four UK starters played 32 minutes or more tonight. The Cats next travel to Knoxville on Saturday to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. UT last played on Tuesday. Kentucky will be playing on just 2-days rest. The Vols are coming off a 13-point road loss to Florida and have lost three of their last five games, including a 73-62 loss to the Wildcats in Rupp.
A win over UT will secure at least a tie with Vandy for the overall SEC title. Even in a tie, UK would be declared the winner given their 2 regular-season wins over the Commordores.
