UK Football Notes 4-12-10

E. J. Fields said he felt good about the scrimmage he had Saturday. He said he hopes he can continue to carry what he does on the practice to the playing field.

- Joker Phillips was expecting a let down in todays practice coming off the big Saturday's scrimmage. It didn't happen. How was practice? "Spriited," was the coaches response. "I think the weather had a lot to do with it." He said the thing they have to do now is take care of the little things - getting in the stance, snap count, flying off the ball, those things it takes to be a good football team.

- Phillips said after looking at the film he thought the effort was a little better than first thought. He said he thought the quarterbacks were better than he thought. He said their performance correlated closest to their experience. Mike Hartline first, Morgan Newton second, and Ryan Mossakowski third.

- On defense the coach pointed out the play of defensive tackle Mark Crawford, who has the reputation of high energy, fearless, no regard for his body and a candidate for leadership. - Phillips said he was amazed at what they were able to get out of Justin Henderson, a man that just walked on campus. "We got sixty snaps from him and last year he was playing against Allendale Fairfax and now he's playing against some of these big guys up front," Phillips said. - Phillips said he has no shortage of leadership on offense and pointed out several guys that he will be looking to as developing into leaders on defense. - Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders said there has been very little change in the terminology and schemes. But they always change a little from year to year in the interest of improving themselves. He said Mike (Hartline) has the best grasp of the defenses and getting them in and out of plays. Newton has to get more consistent in his throwing and needs to accelaerate his understanding of everything, not that he's bad, He's no longer a freshman and there's another whole level of understanding he needs to get to. Mossakowski is a little behind the other two, the coach said. We all need to get better faster, Sanders said. - E. J. Fields said he felt good about the scrimmage he had Saturday. He said he hopes he can continue to carry what he does on the practice to the playing field. "I want to improve my blocking," he said and he's encouraged. "I had quite a few reps Saturday which is a lot for me since I haven't been on the field of play since last fall. I got a little winded but I'm happy with my weight 6-foot-1, 200-pounds."
