Signing Day For Explorer Commitments

Coach John Giannini has three prospects ready to enter the program and was desperately hoping to add a fourth. However Lavoy Allen has chosen to be a Temple Owl. Are the Explorers done with recruiting for the early signing period or are others still being considered?

La Salle head basketball coach John Giannini is expected to receive at least three Letter of Intents during the early signing period, which begins today. Kyle Griffin, a 6"2 combo guard from Germantown Academy committed to La Salle last month. Jerrell Williams and Terrell Williams, 6"8 forward book-ends from Northfield Mt. Hermon School committed to Coach Giannini prior to that. Those are the only definites to sign this week.

The staff's biggest fish, Lavoy Allen just committed to Temple. This development was a real blow to this year fall's recruiting effort as Allen was considered the centerpiece to this class. Just two weeks ago sources indicated that it was a 50/50 split as to whether Allen would ultimately choose La Salle or Rutgers. He was scheduled to visit Rutgers this weekend. Allen would have given the Explorers the much needed post presence that is lacking to go with the athletes Giannini currently has. Allen would have been the anchor that could defend the post, rebound, and get the ball out to the athletes on the break. With the departure of Mike St. John next year, the Explorers are severely lacking someone who can do those things.

The Explorers recently missed out on ex-Villanova commit Kraidon Woods who committed to Arizona State last week. Woods, although thin, is known as a very good shot blocker for his size and would have given that area a large boost. Rumors of La Salle interested in Justin Harper from Virginia also are moot as he just committed to fellow A-10 school Richmond this week.

So it now appears the staff will circle the wagons and re-evaluate their position since Allen has elected to go elsewhere. Too late to bring in someone for the fall. They will need to look at other prospects and hope they can find that elusive low post defender.

In our next story, Explorer Hoop Report will give a list of players La Salle should have recruited or recruited harder and players they should consider for the spring.
