2008 Explorer Prospect: Austin Johnson

Local prospect, Austin Johnson from Cheltenham High School, has the Explorers chasing him among a list of Big East and ACC schools. The 6"7 combo forward has been watched closely by Explorer coaches.

Johnson is an inside post player with the ability to step out and shoot the jumper. He excels on the defensive end and has long arms to allow him to play bigger than his 6"7 frame. Another plus is Johnson is a good student that should have no problems qualifying to play college ball. He plays summer ball for the Playaz AAU program which gave La Salle Kimmani Barrett last year.

Explorer Hoop Report had a chance to watch Johnson go head to head with Barrett shortly before Barrett committed to La Salle. Both players were very active and while Barrett was the more polished player, Johnson showed very well and rebounded the ball very effectively and put in some nice putbacks to keep his team in the game. Since then Johnson has grown and has developed more physically. He has very soft hands and terrific footwork. Another two inches and he most likely would have offers from many more schools. He is a player that has his brightest days ahead.

Johnson had rattled off La Salle, Villanova, North Carolina State, Penn State, and Rutgers when asked about what colleges are recruiting him the hardest. Johnson may be just a tad undersized right now to get upper level Big East and ACC offers and that is why Rutgers probably continues to recruit him hard. He recently attended a Rutgers football game. The recruiting battles for Austin Johnson will only intensify as he continues to fill out physically and mature. The skills are definetly there to become a big-time player. Time will tell.
