Explorers eyeing Jersey frontcourt prospect

La Salle coach Dr. John Giannini is looking for additional help in the frontcourt. One player who has caught his attention as well as many other east coast schools is Dominique Rutledge. This recruiting battle promises to be a tough one as Rutledge has many teams courting him for his services. Read more to find out who is involved with the New Jersey prospect.

With just two scholarships to give for his 2008 recruiting class, Dr. John Giannini and his staff are looking for additional frontcourt talent to add to the La Salle basketball program. One prospect the staff is high on is 6"8 power forward Dominique Rutledge from Edison High School in northern New Jersey. Rutledge's stock has been soaring with his fine summer play. He recently returned from the Orlando Showcase where he was named to the all-tournament team according to his aau coach, Galen Smith. Prior to that, he was also named to the all tournament team at the Triple S Shootout in West Virginia. In addition, Rutledge was named an all-star at the Eastern Invitational tournament earlier this month.

Those big-time performances have led to a slew of coast schools looking to land the blossoming frontcourt post prospect. In addition to La Salle, Smith mentioned Marquette, St. Joseph's, Providence and a bunch of CAA, Atlantic 10, and Big East schools are all vying for Rutledge's services. When asked if Rutledge has a leader, Smith declined to name one. "He has about 5 or 6 schools at the top of his list now". Rutledge has visited St. Joseph's, Providence, Marquette, and Xavier unofficially.

Rutledge stood just 6"2 a couple of years ago. Now at 6"8, Smith took a moment to describe him as a player today. "He is a highly skilled power forward who can play multiple positions but is best suited as a power forward. He has long arms, very strong, and can defend bigger players. He needs to better defend players off the dribble" Smith said when asked about what part of his game he needs to improve for the next level. Rutledge has been averaging 18 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks per game during summer play. He is looking to take all of his visits and make a fall decision according to Smith.
