Recruiting news begins to trickle but will La Salle makes waves during the early signing period?

Just what is La Salle coach John Giannini thinking as the fall recruiting period begins to pick up steam? Is he waiting on two brothers to make a decision before making his move on potential recruits? He was recently seen at a Maryland open gym watching a potential recruit. Is he making his own move in the next couple of weeks?

With all of the latest news on the Morris' twins re-opening their recruitment this past week the question needs to be asked. Is La Salle really a player in their recruitment or are they just being mentioned by the twins out of loyalty? I still believe the Morris twins are still La Salle's if they stay local. I think the Villanova interest is more the twins idea than the Wildcats. Both Marfkief and Marcus Morris want a program where they will be the focal point and will not be recruited over once they arrive. They want to step in and play immediately. While they can have immediate playing time and be a focal point on a BCS conference school next year for a program lacking or filled with younger players you can expect any BCS school to possibly recruit over them. Those schools who do not do that cannot be a factor in a big conference. It is done all of the time.

With that being said I believe La Salle's biggest competition is West Virginia. The Mountaineers have a new coaching staff in place led by head coach Bob Huggins and assistant coach and former La Salle head coach Billy Hahn who have excellent connections in the area. West Virginia needs immediate talent to come in and compete and the staff are excellent recruiters.

So what does La Salle do? Wait on the Morris' or go forward with their recruiting knowing there are no guarantees in recruiting? With just two scholarships, taking any recruit will not allow the Explorers to take both Morris'. Therefore it is extremely important to watch what the staff does with that first scholarship. If they receive a commitment from Andrew Randall or Andrey Semenov and Giannini takes their commitment than by most circumstances they cannot take the Morris'. It will be very interesting over the next month to see who makes the first move....The Morris' or La Salle. Once that is done Explorer fans will know where everything stands with the Morris' and the recruiting picture as a whole.

Coach Gianinni was at the John Carroll School this past Tuesday night to watch 2008 prospect Jakub Kusmieruk work out in front of college coaches. Apparently he liked what he saw from the big center and will continue to recruit him this fall. In addition, Giannini came away impressed with two 2009 prospects, 6"3 guard Erick Smith and 6"5 wing Wyatt Smith according to John Carroll assistant coach Anthony Macri. Explorer fans should keep their eye out for those two rising players as well next year.

6"8 small forward target Andrey Semenov has left Notre Dame Academy in Virginia and will play at Roanoke Catholic High School according to two different sources. La Salle remains very interest in the European import and is also being looked at by Old Dominion and Temple as well as about 12 other schools.

La Salle and Virginia Commonwealth are both trying to get a visit from Andrew Randall. Randall is expected to choose between La Salle, Temple, and VCU in October.

La Salle has dropped out of the Ryan Brooks sweepstakes. The 6"9 combo forward has Rhode Island, Iona, and now Providence as his top schools.
