Adding a defensive back is huge for ULM but in this instance the prospect is huge as in 6'3 175 pound Justin Backus out of North Mesquite high school in Texas.

Backus adds to the excitement from this weekends pull of verbal commitments and talks to Warhawk Nation about how he became a Warhawk.

"ULM didn't come onto the scene until December", said Justin.

Coach Berry and Coach Nichols came to my school and started watching senior film of me with my coaches". "Coach Berry offered me a scholarship right on the spot".

"I was very excited, just felt really blessed to get the offer".

One of Justin's greatest attributes is that he was named to the All State All Academic team - a very prestigious honor in a state so large.

Backus scored a 1430 on his SAT's and holds a 3.75 GPA. On the football field the awards continued as Justin was named to the 1st Team All District team as a corner back.

"ULM watched my film and loved the way I jammed wide receivers at the line of scrimmage and the way I come up and make tackles down field. I don't shy away for contact, I look for it", said Backus.

Justin also shows impressive coverage skills and the ability to quickly react to the ball while it's in the air.

Another good quality in Justin is his confidence and the swagger he brings to a team.

"We are going to a bowl game, in fact I am promising a bowl game". Referring to ULM's out of conference schedule Backus went onto say "Those top 25 teams mean nothing to me, it's just a regular game when the whistle blows".

"When I line up against that Auburn or that Arkansas receiver, I'm leaving it all on the field".

With his incredible size standing 6'3 tall, Justin as a legit shot to come in and get thrown into the fire as a true freshman.

"My expectations are to be on the field as a freshman". "Whoever works harder is going to get that spot and I plan on competing for that spot".

"If I don't get on the field at CB then I will fight for special teams, whatever it takes I will do it".
