The ULM Warhawks(1-5 1-2) could not overcome a 21-0 first half deficit and lose 31-21 in Denton to the UNT Eagles. Warhawks lost starting quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster to knee injury in the second quarter.
UNT defensive lineman Montey Stevenson would pick off a tipped Lancaster pass and return it 20 yards for the games first score. Trailing 7-0 the Warhawks struggled to move the ball and would have to punt the ball right back. Scott Love would hit a beauty and down it at the one yard line.
One first down from the one yard line UNT quarterback Giovanni Vizza would throw a 7 yard sit down pass to Casey Fitzgerald. Casey would shake off Darius Battles and go 99 yards for the score. A flag was throw for a block in the back but was mysteriously picked up and waved off giving UNT a 14-0 lead.
The bad luck would continue when Lancaster would be picked off again, this time by Dominique Green and returned 75 yards for another touchdown. The pass was perfectly thrown but dropped by LaGregory Sapp right into the hands of Green.
Just before the half Cole Wilson had his streak of consecutive field goals end at 17 when he hooked a 43 yard field goal no good.
To start the second half the ULM Warhawks would receive the ball and go right to work. Backup quarterback Trey Revell entered the game and connected with TE Kenneth Zacharie for a 46 yard touchdown cutting the lead to 21-7 UNT.
The ULM offense would sputter the rest of the third and most of the forth quarter due to mental mistakes. Too many penalties on first down put Revell and the offense in big holes that resulted in punts.
A Thomas Moreland 20 yard field goal followed by a Micah Mosley one yard touchdown run would push the North Texas Eagle lead to 24 at 31-7. The Warhawks would make it interesting late when Revell hit Zeek Zacharie again for a touchdown, this one from 3 yards out. Trey would connect with Darrell McNeal for the 2pt conversion to make the score 31-15
ULM would kick and recover the onside kick and move the ball right back down the field. A beautiful 20 yard touchdown pass by Revell on the run to Frank Goodin would cut the UNT lead to 10 but the 2pt conversion failed and UNT(1-5, 1-2) would win this one 31-21.
The UNT defensive line was dominant in this one not letting the warhawks get any kind of run game going. They held the nations leader in consecutive 100 yard rush games to 65 yards on 18 carries. The Mean Green recorded 5 sacks, batted down 6 balls and forced 3 turnovers returning 2 for scores.
The Warhawks will return to action this Saturday when they host winless Florida International Panthers at Malone Stadium.
