MANHASSET, N.Y. - ULM junior tight end Zeek Zacharie was named John Mackey Tight End of the Week by the Nassau Sports Commission. The Cade, La., native recorded six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in ULM's 33-30 triple-overtime victory over Florida Atlantic this past weekend.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor, presented to the tight end with the best performance in the nation, was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season.
This is the second time that Zacharie has received this high honor in his career. He received the award following Warhawks near upset at Kansas last season. Zacharie caught four passes for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 21-19 loss to the Jayhawks, who are currently ranked eighth in the nation.
acharie has been a force for the Warhawks over the past five games (all Sun Belt Conference games) averaging 52.8 receiving yards per game and pulling down all four of his touchdowns on the season.
His touchdown against Florida Atlantic put ULM up 24-14 early in the fourth quarter. He was also a key part of a perfectly executed fake field goal with just 13 seconds remaining regulation. Zacharie was on the receiving end of a 19-yard pass that set the Warhawks up for a potential 28-yard game-winning field goal.
The Nassau County Sports Commission is responsible for the administration of the John Mackey Award and the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2007 recipient of "The Mackey" will be announced on December 6, 2007 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show live on ESPN and presented at the Nassau County Sports Commission Annual Awards Dinner on April 28, 2008.
Zacharie is one of 30 players on the John Mackey Award watch list.
The Warhawks (3-5, 3-2 Sun Belt), who have won three of their last four games, host Middle Tennessee (4-5, 3-1) on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm in Malone Stadium. Tickets are still available and can be purchase in advance at the Malone Stadium ticket office or by phone, 318-342-3ULM.
