St James running back Luther Ambrose has ended the suspense early and announced that he will sign with the ULM Warhawks this Wednesday on National Signing Day. With the departure of Calvin Dawson to the NFL, Luther will step in as a true freshman and get immediate playing time along side returning sophomore Frank "The Tank" Goodin.
"I committed this past Monday but kind of kept it quite", said Ambrose. You know it was just the best fit for me. I feel I can get the most out of my talents at ULM. The coaches talked about getting me the ball on some speed sweeps, some runs out of the slot position and swing passes out of the backfield. Things I have been doing at St James and been successful at".
As a senior Luther ran for over 1,300 yards and scored 19 touchdowns despite missing 3 games to an ankle injury. He helped lead his team to the Class 2A state championship game and was named 1st team All-State in class 2A. For his career at St James, Luther ran for 3,654 yards, 48 touchdowns on the ground, and had a 10.5 yards per carry average. In two years he amassed 1,043 yards on punt and kickoff returns and scored 6 touchdowns. Luther also had 19 catches for 309 yards and 3 more touchdowns.
You want speed numbers? Remember the Mel Brooks move "Spaceballs" when Dark Helmet said "Ludicrous Speed" on my go? That's what Luther possesses, ludicrous speed. He was clocked at the New Orleans scout combine at 4.29 in the forty and 4.10 in the short shuttle. The closest guy at the combine was current ULM commitment Wayne Jacobs with a 4.4 time. In fact, out of the close to 3,000 athletes that were clocked at Scout.com combines across the nation, only 4 players posted faster times. Luther also topped world class athlete Joe McKnight in the 100 meter dash last spring.
ESPN Scout Inc had this to day about Luther as well. "Ambrose may not be very big, but he can flat scoot. He is a bob and weave type back that is very elusive and navigates his way through traffic. His straight-line speed is excellent; athletic ability, speed and quickness. Shows great elusiveness in the open field and will make tacklers miss. He is very good in space. Has good vision. Can make good decisions in the hole. He shows good overall toughness, he will work to break tackles and he is the type of back that doesn't take a lot of clean hits because of his ability to avoid. He can re-direct and cut against the grain as good as anyone. Is able to create and make a positive out of what looks to be a loss because he is so shifty in a short area of space".
"I liked the city of Monroe when I visited", said Ambrose. I like where ULM is at right now, their campus was first class as well. I am looking forward to working out with those guys in the summer and contributing to the team".
ULM, Memphis, ULL, Northern Illinois, Louisiana Tech, and Northwestern all offered me", said Luther. I guess when it came down to it, Memphis was too far and I liked ULM's offense the best". Ambrose plans on earning a degree in Buisness and holds a 2.9 GPA. Ambrose will sign with current teammate Casey Narcisse who is also verbally committed to the ULM Warhawks. They both will join current Warhawk and former teammate Jordan Landry.
